REST, BALANCE or RENEW: Choosing Your Massage Blend

Book a Custom Therapeutic Massage at Avenue Apothecary & Spa and one question comes up before you ever reach the table: which blend? The menu offers three, REST, BALANCE and RENEW, and picking well takes about a minute once you know what each one is for. Here's how to think it through, plus the times when a different massage on the menu is the better fit.

How the Custom Therapeutic Massage works

The Custom Therapeutic Massage runs 60 minutes for $160 or 90 minutes for $235. The word custom is doing real work. Your therapist can work in light, medium or firm pressure, and you choose one of three aromatic blends to set the tone for the whole session.

Those are two separate decisions, and it helps to treat them that way. Pressure is about the hands: long gliding strokes, slower kneading, firmer work on one stubborn spot. The blend is about what you breathe and how the oil feels on your skin. Tell your therapist both at the start, and speak up mid-session if a shoulder needs less or more. Therapists would much rather adjust than have you quietly put up with it. If you'd like a male or female therapist, mention that when you schedule.

REST: lavender, for the worn-down week

The menu describes REST as a deeply relaxing treatment built on long, connective strokes, with notes of lavender, meant to ease fatigue and soothe an over-stressed nervous system. Choose it when you feel tired all over rather than sore in one place. Maybe you've been hosting a house full of visitors, sleeping badly, driving too much, and what you want most is to stop thinking for an hour. Lavender is also a familiar, soft scent, so it's a comfortable pick if you're new to aromatherapy and don't want any surprises.

BALANCE: ginger, for warmth and grounding

BALANCE is a warming herbal massage with ginger. The menu says it grounds the mind, eases muscle tension and restores a sense of internal balance. Where REST is soft and sleepy, BALANCE has more warmth and a bit more purpose. It suits a cool, damp day in the off-season, or a time when your shoulders are tight and your mind is racing at the same moment. If lavender isn't your scent, BALANCE is the natural alternative.

RENEW: arnica, for the active days

RENEW is the stimulating one. The menu describes cooling arnica, a focus on circulation, and attention to sore muscles and stiff joints, with an energizing finish rather than a drowsy one. It fits after a long bike ride, a weekend of golf, a day hauling beach chairs, or a run of shifts on your feet. If you plan to head out for dinner afterward instead of going home to nap, RENEW matches that plan.

When a different massage fits better

The three blends all live inside the Custom Therapeutic Massage. Sometimes what you want sits outside it.

  • Deep tissue: if firm pressure is the main thing, add the Deep Tissue enhancement for $25 to your Custom Therapeutic Massage. The menu describes it as advanced techniques that reach deeper levels of muscle tissue and target knots. For a session built around it, there's the Muscle Recovery Deep Tissue Massage, 60 minutes for $185 or 90 minutes for $270, which combines Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release and Russian Massage techniques and was created with athletes and tension in mind.
  • Nirvana Stress Relief Massage: 60 minutes for $185 or 90 minutes for $270. It pairs Swedish-style soft tissue work with aromatherapy, and you pick from four blends: cardamom, neroli, balsam fir or holy basil. Choose it when you want more scent variety than lavender, ginger and arnica, and a flowing, gentler style.
  • Chill Massage: 60 minutes for $210 or 90 minutes for $310. It uses a cannabinoid-based blend and comes with a wellness shot that includes 30mg of full-spectrum CBD. If that raises a question for you, for work or personal reasons, ask when you book so you can decide before the day.

Add-ons that pair well with each blend

Menu enhancements are inclusive of treatment time, so a 60-minute massage stays 60 minutes. A few that match the blends:

  • Alpine Arnica Muscle Repair Enhancement, $25: arnica, sweet birch and magnesium, a natural partner for RENEW.
  • Hot Stone Therapy Sampler, $15: warm basalt stones, a good match for BALANCE on a cold day.
  • Ayurvedic Scalp Massage, $30: head, neck and shoulders with herbal oils, nice alongside REST.
  • Peppermint Foot Therapy, $25: reflexology-style work on calves and feet, finished with steamed towels.

A quick way to decide

Tired all over: REST. Tight and unsettled: BALANCE. Sore from being active: RENEW. Want firm pressure: deep tissue. Curious about scent: Nirvana. Interested in the cannabinoid line: Chill. Still not sure? Call or text 302-227-5649 and describe how your week has gone. Spa members, by the way, can spend their monthly treatment on a 60-minute Custom Therapeutic Massage, so the blend question comes up for them every month.

You'll find every price, duration and enhancement on the treatment menu under Therapeutic Massage. The spa suggests booking at least two weeks ahead for the widest choice of times, and plan to arrive 15 minutes early to fill out the consultation form.
