Beach-Season Skin: Sun Goddess, Vitamin Sea and Why Organic

A week at the Delaware shore is hard on skin in small ways. Sun, salt, wind, layers of sunscreen and long days outdoors all add up, and by Wednesday your face may feel different than it did on Saturday. Avenue Apothecary & Spa sits one block off the ocean in downtown Rehoboth Beach, so the menu has a few facials that suit the season. Here's what two of them involve, how mineral SPF fits in, and why the spa works only with natural and organic products.

Sun Goddess Calendula Repair Facial

This is the spa's sun-season facial: 60 minutes for $185. The menu calls it a facial for sun lovers of all kinds, built around whole-plant ingredients, specifically Camu Camu, Rosehip, Sea Buckthorn and Calendula. It lists hyperpigmentation, scarring and sun-exposed skin as concerns it suits, with the focus on brightening, evening the look of skin tone and calming irritated skin.

Plant-based ingredients like these are common in botanical skin care, and the idea is nourishment rather than harsh exfoliation. Think of it as the facial to book when your skin feels tired from the outdoors and you want to be kind to it.

One practical note. If your skin is currently sunburned or very tender, tell the front desk when you book and again on the consultation form. That gives the team a chance to steer you toward the right treatment, or toward waiting a few days.

Vitamin Sea Ultra Collagen Facial

Vitamin Sea is 60 minutes for $210, and the name is a good pun for a beach town. According to the menu, it combines the Blueberry Detox Facial with the Arctic Berry Peel, followed by a three-tier serum treatment featuring vitamin C, vitamin E and peptides. The treatment ends with pure mineral SPF and blue light protection.

That finishing step is the one to think about. Exfoliated skin tends to be more sensitive, which is why spas usually close a peel-style facial with sunscreen. Ending with mineral SPF means you walk back onto Rehoboth Avenue already covered. If you have a choice, book it early in your trip or the day before a lighter outdoor day, rather than right before eight hours on the sand.

Mineral SPF, in plain terms

Mineral sunscreens use ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on the surface of the skin. Chemical sunscreens use different ingredients that work in another way. Either type does its job only if you apply enough and reapply. Read the label for how often, and reapply after swimming or sweating. A sunscreen finish at the end of a facial is a good start to the day, not a plan for the whole afternoon.

The spa's makeup services use the same kind of thinking. All cosmetic applications are done with all natural, mineral makeup from the skincare lines sold in the apothecary, which is handy if you're getting ready for a wedding weekend on the beach.

Other treatments that suit a beach week

  • Botanical Refresh Facial, 60 minutes, $160: a customized facial with gentle alpha hydroxy acid peels. The menu describes it as having no down time.
  • Radiance Reset Facial, 60 minutes, $185: a deeper exfoliation and resurfacing option, with peel choices made with your esthetician.
  • DERMAPLANEpro Peel Facial, 60 minutes, $235: professional dermaplaning. The menu says it should be done no more than every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Waxing: the spa recommends a 24 hour gap before and after waxing for sun or tanning booth exposure, since your skin may still be sensitive. Plan waxing before the trip or after a day or two of shade, not between beach days.

Why natural and organic

The spa's stated mission is to provide an organic, natural experience for all people. In its own words, it researches and obtains products from around the world, uses them in treatments, and teaches clients about continued use of natural, organic products. The spa says all of its treatments and all of the products it sells follow that rule, and that it only works with vendors who share green philosophies. It also says it recycles close to 90% of its waste and 100% of its paper, plastic and glass.

Product lines named on the spa's site include Eminence Organic Skin Care and Naturopathica Holistics, both available in the apothecary. That's useful if you'd like to keep using something at home that your esthetician used on you.

One honest caution: natural doesn't mean gentle on everyone. Plants can trigger allergies and sensitivities just as synthetic ingredients can. List your known allergies on the consultation form. If you have a long allergen list, the Auto-Immune & Allergy Support Facial (60 minutes, $210) uses jojoba, chia seed, raw honey and calendula and is the slower, softer option on the menu.

Booking it around your trip

Spa services here are in high demand, and the spa suggests booking at least two weeks ahead for the widest selection. Arrive 15 minutes early. In summer, parking nearby is paid by meter, city pass or the ParkMobile app, so leave time for that too. Every facial, with current prices and durations, is on the treatment menu under Organic Facials. Call or text 302-227-5649 and tell the front desk what your skin has been through.
