Your First Visit to a Day Spa: What to Expect

If you've never been to a day spa, the unknowns pile up fast. Do I undress? Who decides the pressure? What if I'm late? Nothing here is complicated, and knowing the routine in advance lets you spend the hour on the table instead of worrying about it. This is the first-visit walk-through for Avenue Apothecary & Spa at 110 Rehoboth Ave, Ste A, in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

Before you book

The spa suggests scheduling at least two weeks ahead for the widest selection of services and appointment times, though they'll do their best to fit you in sooner. Call or text 302-227-5649. When you book, say whether you'd like a male or female massage therapist. The spa employs both, and scheduling is the time to mention it, not the front door.

If you're unsure what to book, describe what you're after, whether that's quiet, sore muscles or a facial for skin you want to understand better, and ask. The treatment menu lists every service with its length and price, so you know the cost before you arrive. Appointments are reserved with a credit card number, which ties into the cancellation policy further down.

The day itself: arrive 15 minutes early

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled service. That time covers check-in, filling out paperwork, settling down and finding parking. Parking on Rehoboth Avenue or the side streets within walking distance is usually relatively easy to find. In summer those spaces are paid, by coin meter, a city parking pass or the ParkMobile app. From fall through spring, parking is free. Don't park in the Avenue Inn Hotel garage or in spaces marked for hotel guests. The spa is plain about it: cars there get towed. Add a few minutes in July and August.

There's one more reason for the cushion. Your service has to end on time no matter when you arrived, so the next guest isn't kept waiting. Show up late and your treatment gets shorter, not the schedule longer.

The consultation form

Most services ask you to fill out a client consultation form. Forms like this typically cover health considerations, sensitivities and what you'd like from the session, so your therapist or esthetician knows what to work with. Fill it out honestly. It's the reason a custom massage can actually be custom, and it's the place to mention pregnancy, allergies or anything else you want your practitioner to know.

Phones off, voices low

To keep the atmosphere quiet, the spa asks that cell phones be turned off or left at the front desk, and that conversation stays quiet in all areas. There are no accommodations for young children, so arrange care ahead of time. Before your treatment you can wait in the meditation and waiting area, with its navy chairs and wood floor. Sit down, breathe, and let the phone stay off.

Robes, slippers, draping and showers

If you book multiple services, robes and slippers are provided. Shower facilities are available if you need one, but check with the receptionist when you schedule, since availability can vary.

For massage and body treatments, the spa says it pays careful attention to draping for your privacy and comfort. In general, that means you're covered by a sheet or blanket, with only the area being worked on uncovered at any moment. Undress to whatever level is comfortable for you. If you aren't sure, ask your therapist before they leave the room.

Speaking up during the treatment

Being a good guest means giving feedback. Pressure too firm, room too warm, a stroke you'd rather skip: say it. Nobody takes it personally. The Custom Therapeutic Massage works in light, medium or firm pressure, and your therapist will adjust. For a facial, tell your esthetician about any products you currently use, and about anything that stings.

The cancellation policy, in plain numbers

For individual services, the spa requires 48 hours of notice to avoid a cancellation fee of 50% of the booked services. For spa packages and groups, it's 24 hours of notice per person for changes or cancellations. The policy exists so another guest can take the time and so the therapists' schedules are respected. If something comes up, call as early as you can.

After the treatment

Prices don't include gratuities for the therapists. Before you leave, it's worth a moment at the front desk to rebook while you feel good. The spa's loyalty program awards points automatically: 500 for scheduling your next visit during the current one, and new clients earn 2,000 points for booking their next visit during their first. The points never expire.

The apothecary shop is right there as you leave, with skincare, makeup, body care, wellness products and gift cards. You're never required to buy, but it's a good place to ask what was used on your skin. When you're ready to book, the treatment menu has everything you need, and 302-227-5649 reaches the front desk by call or text.
